May 07, 2020: Arrest and harassment of hirak activists – FIDH appeals to the Algerian authorities
The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders (FIDH-OMCT) calls for the immediate release of human rights defenders and an end to all forms of harassment. In a study made public today, Thursday 7 May, entitled ‘Algeria: Focus on Hirak’, the NGO has listed the individual situations of around twenty human rights defenders harassed by the Algerian authorities. “While there are no official figures for arrests or detentions, the National Committee for the Liberation of Detainees (CNLD) estimated on 30 March 2020 the number of ‘Hirak detainees’ at 1,200,” the document said. “Since the start of the popular uprising on 22 February 2019, arrests, arbitrary detentions and ill-treatment of peaceful activists but also of ordinary demonstrators have multiplied,” the document said. “Repression resumed in February, with demonstrations violently repressed by the police, leading to hundreds of arrests of peaceful demonstrators, and a series of heavy sentences from March onwards”. Highlighting the sense of responsibility of the Hirak actors, who decided to suspend all street activities to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the Observatory denounces the attitude of the authorities. “In response, the authorities continued to arrest, harass and condemn human rights defenders who had demonstrated peacefully until March 15, 2020,” deplores the organization while specifying that “on April 6, 2020, a court in Algiers sentenced Mr. Abdelouahab Fersaoui, president of the Rassemblement actions jeunesse (RAJ), to one year in prison for “attacking the integrity of the national territory” and “inciting violence to harm national defense.
