July 19, 2020: Several contaminations in El Harrach prison
The prison of El Harrach in Algiers, seems to be affected by the spread of the coronavirus epidemic. Two deaths and several contaminations have been recorded within the prison itself.
The latest death recorded in El Harrach prison is the former Minister of Information Technology and Communication Moussa Benhamadi. He died during the night of Friday to Saturday at the Mustapha Pasha University Hospital. The first death of the coronavirus in prison was the doctor and former treasurer of the association Peace and Solidarity Ali Lakhdari, placed in pre-trial detention in the summer of 2019, in connection with the case relating to the misappropriation of national solidarity funds.
Numerous sanitary measures have been taken at El Harrach prison where “some guards and inmates had been tested positive and therefore confined until their recovery,” reported the daily El Watan on Sunday.
In recent days, several other cases have been reported among personalities incarcerated within the prison itself. These are former ministers Ahmed Ouyahia, Amara Benyounès, Abdelmalek Sellal and Youcef Yousfi, Abdelkader Ouali, the former boss of the SIH (a hotel investment company) Hamid Melzi, the former CEO of Onou (Office national des œuvres universitaires) Abdelhak Boudrâa. All these former senior officials are receiving care and, responding well to the protocol of treatment, says the same source.

July 19, 2020: Tebboune’s new statements
Head of State Abdelmadjid Tebboune granted an interview to some national media officials in which he addressed the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis. During his meeting, Mr. Tebboune spoke of the workers affected by the health crisis, announcing compensation for small traders and artisans. “We will soon take decisions to compensate workers affected by the crisis”, revealed Tebboune, adding that the state is “financially comfortable contrary to what is said”. Speaking on the reconfirmation, the head of state said the state does not want to impose confinement by force. “We are counting on awareness”.

The wali of Tipaza, Amar El-Hadj Moussa, announced today, Saturday July 18, the lifting of the partial confinement imposed in 10 municipalities of the wilaya, on Thursday July 10, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the next day.

July 18, 2020: Reorganization of the confinement schedules for 8 communes of Djelfa

The Interior Ministry announces the reorganization of the confinement schedules in four communes of the wilaya of El Oued from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. instead of 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. in order to fight against the COVID-19 outbreak. These are the communes of El Oued (capital of the wilaya), El Meghair, Djamaa and Kouinine, according to the same source.

The Interior Ministry announced in a statement on Monday that new partial containment measures have been decided in 9 communities in the wilaya of Biskra.
